Trailers aren't the only way that the distribution companies can grab a potential customer's attention. Movie posters, billboards, busses and social media statuses are also effective methods of communicating the information to the public. It is important for a distribution company to know how to advertise their product to their target audience. For example the younger generation may use social media more than the older generations. So if the company wanted to advertise a media product aimed at teens then social media may be better off that advertising on Tv or on a billboard.
If my Horror trailer was to be advertised on television then it would be on later night past the watershed 9pm. This is when the more violent pieces of television can be shown.
Like I mentioned, it is important for the distribution companies to know what their target audience want to see. For example a young child will want a movie poster full of colour and seem exciting, such as the latest Spongebob Squarepants movie. But an older audience who wants to watch a horror film will want a more graphic and possibly more violent image to catch their attention such as the Saw 3 movie poster. These both give the viewer/consumer of the media a strong idea on what to expect in the film.
I believe that because horror film characters do not have a regular spot in films that they are not recognisable enough to be on the front cover and represent the movie where as characters such as Spongebob already have a fanbase and are a strong enough character to represent the brand. Also the side characters are as recognisable such as Squidward and Patrick Star.
The timing of a trailer date is also key, horror movies are usually released around October time, just in time for the Halloween scares. One of my personal favourite timings of a film to be released was when Marvel released Deadpool. The movie was released on February 10th 2016. Being only 4 days away from St. Valentines Day, Marvel's target audience (Young males). Marvel's marketing team used social media including Youtube clips going viral such as Deadpool's testicular cancer advert. The film having a link to cancer made it a relevant character to address he audience. Having a humorous side to it also showed the public on what type of character he is making hime more exposed to the public.
